In short: there are two main ways from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo: the JR train and the airport bus. The JR train leaves from a station on the basement floor (B1F) of the terminal building and arrives at JR Sapporo Station. JR Hokkaido lists its fastest times as 33, 37, and 43 minutes, depending on the type of train. The airport bus leaves from the first floor of the domestic and international terminal buildings and stops at several places in central Sapporo. For the bus, JR Hokkaido’s page on alternatives when trains are disrupted gives about 70 to 90 minutes and about 1,500 yen one way, while the airport’s transportation page gives about 1 hour 50 minutes by bus; Hokuto Kotsu’s page lists 1,500 yen for an adult. Hokuto Kotsu’s FAQ says each person’s trunk space is about one suitcase. The numbers differ by source (the airport’s own pages say about 30 or about 40 minutes by train), so treat every time as rough and check the operator’s timetable before you ride. Both options can be slowed by weather, so I suggest leaving extra time. I could not find a train fare on the official pages I read, so I do not give one. Times and fares below were checked on October 9, 2026; please check the official pages for current details.

If you are arriving from a hot country, the first hours in a new city are easier when you already know which way you are going. This post compares the two ways in plain English, using official pages.

Please read this first: this post is general information. I am an individual who lives in Sapporo. I am not an airline, a rail company, a bus company, or a government official, and I am not affiliated with any of them. Quotes below are the wording of the English pages, or my English translation where I say the page is in Japanese. Anything marked “my suggestion” is not from an official page. Times, fares, and timetables change, so please check the official pages listed at the end.

The two main choices at a glance

JR train Airport bus
Where it leaves JR New Chitose Airport Station, on floor B1F of the Terminal Building Bus stops on the first floor of the domestic and international terminal buildings
Where it arrives in Sapporo JR Sapporo Station Stops in central Sapporo, including one in front of Sapporo Station (Hokuto Kotsu’s stop list also has stops at Susukino and Odori Park; many stop names are hotel names)
Rough time JR Hokkaido lists the fastest as 33, 37, or 43 minutes, depending on the train type; the airport’s pages say about 30 minutes (JR Line page) and about 40 minutes (transportation page) About 70 to 90 minutes (JR Hokkaido’s page on alternatives when trains are disrupted) or about 1 hour 50 minutes (the airport’s transportation page); the sources differ, so check the operator’s timetable; Hokuto Kotsu says its times are only a guide
Fare, one way Not shown on the official pages I read, so I do not give one About 1,500 yen on JR Hokkaido’s page on alternatives when trains are disrupted; Hokuto Kotsu’s page lists 1,500 yen for an adult and 750 yen for a child
Reservation Most seats need no reservation; reserved seats are in car 4 only No reservation, and you pay when you get off (Hokuto Kotsu)
Luggage Up to 2 items, each no more than 30 kg, with a size limit Trunk space about one suitcase per person (Hokuto Kotsu)
In bad weather Check station boards and JR’s information Travel time can increase or services can be suspended

Each row is explained below, with the source named, and my own suggestions are marked as such.

The JR train

Where to find it. The airport’s JR page says: “JR New Chitose Airport Station is located on floor B1F of the Terminal Building.” The airport’s transportation page says the station is directly connected from the basement floor of the terminal building.

Where it goes. JR Hokkaido’s airport page describes a direct service between New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, and Otaru. It says some trains run directly to Otaru, and its note for Sapporo Station says: “Not all trains go to Otaru. Please check the destination before boarding.”

How long. Different official pages give slightly different figures, so I treat them as rough:

Page What it says about time to Sapporo
JR Hokkaido, airport train page “33 mins to Sapporo” at the fastest; the page lists the fastest Special Rapid at 33 minutes, Rapid at 37 minutes, and Semi-Rapid at 43 minutes
New Chitose Airport, JR Line page About 30 minutes to Sapporo without transfers
New Chitose Airport, transportation page JR Sapporo Station is about 40 minutes by train

JR Hokkaido’s page also says there are six Airport Trains per hour between 9:00 and 16:00 from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo: 1 Special Rapid, 3 Rapid, and 2 Semi-Rapid. Outside those hours, I did not check frequency, so please look at the timetable search the page links to.

Seats and tickets.

  • Non-reserved seats: the page says no reservation is required for most seats. They are in cars 1 to 3 and 5 and 6.
  • Reserved seats: these are available only in car 4. The page says: “Passengers without a reserved seat ticket are not allowed to enter car 4.”
  • Seats may be full: the page warns about this for non-reserved cars.
  • IC cards: the page says you can use IC cards such as Suica, ICOCA, PASMO, and Kitaca, and just tap at the ticket gate.
  • Paper tickets: the ticket vending machine is cash only. Reserved-seat ticket machines and the call-center-assisted (orange) machines, which the page says are available at some stations only, accept cash and credit cards, and so does the JR ticket counter. The page also says: “Only cash and credit cards are accepted. QR code payments are not supported.”

I could not find a train fare on the JR Hokkaido English pages or the airport pages I read. For the fare, use the timetable and fare search on JR Hokkaido’s website.

Luggage. JR Hokkaido’s page says: “❶+❷+❸ must be within 250 cm (maximum length: 2 m), up to 2 items, each weighing no more than 30 kg”. The symbols refer to a diagram on the page, so look at the diagram for what each number means. The page adds that some items may not be allowed, and recommends a luggage delivery service: “Use a luggage delivery service and travel light!”

The airport bus

Where to find it. The airport’s bus page lists the bus stops on the first floor of both the domestic and the international terminal buildings. In the row for the Sapporo city center, the page shows platform numbers 14 and 22 for the domestic terminal and 84 for the international terminal. The page also says the domestic bus counter is on the first floor of the domestic terminal building, with bus timetables and stops for each route, and that the international terminal has a transportation information counter on the first floor.

Who runs it. For the Sapporo city center, the airport’s page lists two companies: Hokuto Kotsu and Hokkaido Chuo Bus. Each has its own timetable page. The details below come from Hokuto Kotsu’s pages, which are in Japanese (my English translation). Another operator’s fare or rules may differ, so check that operator’s page for the bus you plan to take.

Where it goes. Hokuto Kotsu’s stop list for Sapporo city center includes a stop in front of Sapporo Station, stops at Susukino, and a stop at Odori Park, among others. Many stop names are hotel names. The stop that is closest to your hotel may not be the first or last, so look at the stop list before you board.

How long and how much. JR Hokkaido’s page on alternatives when trains are disrupted lists the airport bus to Sapporo as “Approx. 70-90 min” and “Approx. 1,500 yen” one way. Those figures are given as the bus option on that page, not as a regular timetable. Hokuto Kotsu’s page shows a fare of 1,500 yen for an adult and 750 yen for a child for the main central stops, and says the travel times in its timetable are only a guide that can be delayed by traffic. The airport’s transportation page gives a longer figure for the bus, about 1 hour 50 minutes to JR Sapporo Station, while the same page gives about 40 minutes by train and the airport’s JR Line page gives about 30 minutes. Because the sources differ (about 70 to 90 minutes on JR Hokkaido’s page, about 1 hour 50 minutes on the airport’s page), treat all times as rough and check the operator’s timetable before you ride.

How to ride (Hokuto Kotsu).

  • No reservation: the airport bus is not a reserved service. If a bus is full, you are guided to the next one.
  • No ticket needed in advance: you pay when you get out.
  • Payment: Hokuto Kotsu’s airport bus page lists cash, contactless payment with credit cards, PayPay, and coupon or round-trip tickets. Its FAQ explains how each works, for example paying the set fare when you get off if you use cash.
  • Seat belts: the FAQ says all routes run on the expressway and a seat belt is required, so you must be seated.
  • Delay certificate: the FAQ says a delay certificate can be issued; ask the driver.

Luggage (Hokuto Kotsu). The FAQ says luggage in the trunk is limited to about the size of one suitcase per person. If the trunk becomes full, Hokuto Kotsu may refuse luggage at the stop that day, and it says it is not responsible for damage to luggage in the trunk.

Should I take the train or the bus?

The official pages do not tell you which is better, because it depends on your trip. These are my suggestions:

If this is you You may lean toward Why (my suggestion)
You want the most predictable time Train A train does not sit in road traffic, and the pages give one-way fastest times of 33 to 43 minutes
You are heading to the area around Sapporo Station Train The train arrives at Sapporo Station
Your hotel is near a bus stop on the route Bus You may avoid carrying bags through a large station, but check the stop list first
You have more than one suitcase per person Train, or a luggage delivery service The bus trunk (Hokuto Kotsu) is limited to about one suitcase per person, and the train allows up to 2 items

These are not rules. Please decide with the official information in front of you.

What happens to the train and bus in snow?

Snow is part of Sapporo’s winter, and it can affect both options. Here is what the official pages say.

  • JR Hokkaido’s page for when trains are disrupted says to check the information boards and the latest operation information. It also says: “Travel time may increase or services may be suspended depending on weather and road conditions.” The sentence appears in the page’s notes about alternative transportation, and the airport bus is one of the alternatives the page lists.
  • The same page says: “Alternative transportation (such as buses) may become extremely crowded when trains are cancelled.”
  • For a train delay or cancellation, the page says a certificate of delay can be issued on request at the station.
  • Bus operators such as Hokuto Kotsu post service notices on their airport bus pages, so check the operator’s notices for the day you travel.

My suggestions: look at both the JR information and the bus operator’s notices on the day you travel, allow extra time, and avoid tight connections on the same day, such as a booked tour that starts soon after you land. If you are not used to cold weather, keep a warm layer in your hand luggage, not only in your checked bag, because you may wait outside or in a cold station. For a full list of what to bring, see this winter packing list on Sapporo Insider Guide, a sister site written by the same Sapporo resident.
